Well, what do you know, this is my last post and im doing it at 11:49 on Sunday night. Procrastion much? Yep. Well, I'm going to go out with bang and talk about the atomic bomb. (oh man I'm funny, but it is actually a very serious matter where hundreds of thousands of japanese citizens were killed).
Anyways, I found this topic to be extremly hard to completely understand. The question has to be asked "Was the weight of the catastrophy less than that of what would have been suffered if it had not occured?" People will always argue this, but we will never know the true answer to that question, and even if we knew the numbers of soldiers that would have died, soldiers are different that innocent women and children. It is really hard for me to say in my heart that we were truly justified in killing all those people.
On Friday, we had a debate in which i was to prove that the US's motive behind dropping the bomb was more than it seemed, it was to intimidate the USSR. At first, I thought that this was ludicrous, but after further research it became clear to me that this was a factor, and it undoubtly had a great impact on the US's relationship with the Soviet Union in the years to come. The US greatly wanted to contain communism and stop it from spreading as much as they could. The USSR had planned on attacking Japan 3 months after the end of the European war. 2 days before what would have marked the three month date, the US dropped the bomb on Japan. We did not want the USSR to spread south and have influence in Japan and its territory. The USSR and the US were the two most powerful nations at the time and the US wanted to prove its superiority and power to the Soviet Union and the rest of the world. The US did not want the USSR to want a lot of land in Europe and risk spreading communism west either.
